Glad you enjoyed it! My follow up to this essay -- and my previous essay on tapestries -- is in fact dedicated just to those "Unicorn Hunt" tapestries in the Cloisters and to the "Lady and the Unicorn" cycle in the Cluny in Paris. I'll post it in 2-3 weeks.
Great article, Ben, thank you! You mentioned Scotland and Bruges so I was surprised that you skipped the Scottish Order of the Unicorn, for which the only extant example is in a glass window portrait of Anselm Adornes at the Jeruzalemkerk in Bruges. I feel like an idiot for not knowing how to add a picture to this comment, but I found an article you may find interesting in this regard:
That’s interesting! I didn’t know about it actually. To be honest, I just went through my collection of personal photos to make the post. And I have not been in the Jerusalemkerk. I did grab the bestiary pix from online because I happened to know about them. But I suppose I should have done some google searches to see if anything else might pop up that’s worth inclusion. Too late now, lol.
Loved this 👌
Thanks!
Enjoyed this very much. The images I know best are the late 15th century tapestries in the Cloisters in NYC. I will see them with new eyes.
