This article is an absolute revelation. I had no idea that Albi Cathedral was so astonishing. I had seen pictures of it, but only showing thee rather forbidding and uninspiring fortress-like brick exterior. I've never seen the interior before. now very high on my list of places to visit - thank you Ben!
Amazing work as always! There were so many movements that wanted to dematerialize the Church: Cistercians, Albigensians... Ironically, High Gothic did it better than any of them. I strongly believe this church inspired the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York. Thoughts?
Interesting; I am not familiar with the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York, but looking at the photos online it does have a similar fortress like feel on the outside, and the way the engaged buttresses are articulated on the interior are similar as well.
One of my personal favourites... It's difficult to convey with photographs just how stunning the exterior is in real life. The contrast between the weathered rose-coloured bricks and the severe 'modernist' shape of the building is very striking. And those shadows!

Good thing the cathars didn't succeed... we wouldn't be enjoying such beauty otherwise
